South African Museum
Things to see and do at the South African Museum
- See over 1.5 million items of cultural and scientific importance. For every object on exhibition at the South African Museum, there are thousands more carefully stored away. For nearly 200 years scientists at the museum have been adding to these collections and studying them
- Learn about fossils over a million years old. The collections now range from fossils almost 700 million years old including that of insects and fish
- Visit nearby heritage sites such as St George’s Cathedral, South African Houses of Parliament and South African National Gallery. Or explore even further to the South African Library, Jewish Museum and the Great Synagogue
- Visit the Planetarium, adjoining the museum, where you can learn more about the planets and stars, or take a stroll through the Company's Garden and watch the squirrels go by
